About 10 years ago, I discovered a very close family member, my brother, was consumed with drug addiction. I did not understand why my brother would let things get so out of control, why he wouldn’t just stop all the drug use and the associated chaos and just be the person I’d always known, admired and loved. So I began researching addiction, drug rehab and his particular drug of choice and discovered that for millions of people, it’s just not that easy. The physical effects of drug abuse alone can make it impossible for anyone to “just stop” not to mention the mental/emotional effects of abuse.

My brother spiraled downward quickly and I knew that time was short. If he didn’t stop soon, I would lose him and I couldn’t bear the thought of that. Panicked and frightened, I started looking for a solution to his problem. This process was frustrating to say the least. Unreturned phone calls to drug rehabs, no beds available, waiting lists, and confusing approaches to treatment all added to the fear and frustration that I and my entire family felt. We finally found a drug rehab for him and, thankfully, it worked. He has been clean for over 8 years and is very successful in his field. He has returned to the person I knew before drugs devastated his and our lives.

That search for a drug rehab for my brother opened my eyes to a problem I didn’t ever fully acknowledge before. There are millions of people who are addicted to illicit drugs, alcohol or prescription drugs and they are not getting the help they need to recover. I believe comprehensive drug rehab is necessary for an individual to overcome addiction. I want to contribute, in some small way, to helping others who find themselves in situations similar to that of my family’s 10 years ago.
